About Yeongnam Alps Provincial Park

Yeongnam Alps Provincial Park encompasses an impressive mountain range in the southeastern region of the Korean Peninsula, mainly within South Gyeongsang Province. Often called the "Yeongnam Alps" due to its resemblance to the European Alps, the area boasts several peaks over 1,000 meters, including the iconic Cheonhwangsan, Gajisan, and Sinbulsan Mountains. The park’s rugged terrain features granite peaks, dense forests, and numerous clear mountain streams that create an attractive environment for outdoor enthusiasts. Ecologically, the park is home to diverse flora and fauna, including native Korean pine, oak forests, and wildlife such as musk deer, wild boar, and various bird species. Historically, the region has been culturally significant with several ancient temples and hermitages nestled in its valleys, such as Tongdosa Temple near Gajisan, one of Korea’s critical Buddhist sites. Visitors enjoy extensive hiking opportunities, often engaging in multi-day treks along well-maintained trails that reward with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Sea of Japan (East Sea). The Yeongnam Alps also provide opportunities for rock climbing, fishing in mountain streams, and winter snow sports. The park’s natural beauty combined with its accessibility from cities like Ulsan and Busan makes it a favored destination for both locals and tourists seeking outdoor adventure and tranquility.
